accelerated
critical neural pathway formation
The full scientific name of the procedure Bashir underwent at age seven. It
involves increased growth of the neural networks in the cerebral cortex.
basilar
arterial scan
When
O'Brien encountered a future in which he had died of radiation nerve damage,
the future Bashir told him to tell Bashir's past self to run one in order
to catch the damage in time. O'Brien did so. [Visionary]
biomolecular
replication
Bashir's
"audacious and groundbreaking" work in this field earned him a nomination
for the 2371 Carrington Award
DNA reference
scan
Kajada had Bashir run one on Vantika's body to verify its identity.
DNA resequencing
A
procedure in which a subject is genetically engineered for specific traits.
It is illegal except to correct severe birth defects, but it was going on
on Adigeon Prime in 2348, when Bashir's parents had it done to him. Any individual
discovered to have been so treated is barred from serving in Starfleet or
practicing medicine, in order to discourage the creation of genetic "supermen"
like Khan Singh. In some instances the subject suffers incurable mental side
effects.
Note: O'Brien said in "Doctor Bashir, I Presume" that there hadn't been a case in 100 years; this was contradicted in "Statistical Probabilities" by the revelation that there were several genetically engineered people who had been institutionalized due to incurable side effects of the treatment. (O'Brien very probably was unaware of them.)
electrophoretic
analysis
A
medical test of cellular components. Bashir used it to determine the origin
of cell material found in Ibudan's quarters.
enzymatic
induction
Tried by Bashir and Mora to stabilize the baby Changeling's molecular matrix;
it failed.
hexagen
therapy
A treatment for Yarim-Fel syndrome
hypothalmic
feedback loop
Bashir planned to trigger one by raising his blood pressure in order to pull
himself and O'Brien out of Sloan's mind.
nadion
bursts
Bashir suggested slowing down the progress of the Founder's disease in Odo
with a series of these.
neural
imaging scan
A
medical scan to test a patient's visual cortex. Bashir did one on O'Brien
when O'Brien came down with aphasia. [Babel]
neural
pathway induction
A procedure which was needed to treat Kira for the neural pathway damage she
received from an energy discharge as the Defiant entered the energy barrier
surrounding Gaia. The Defiant didn't have the right equipment available
neural
polaric induction
A very serious operation which Bashir needed to perform on Sisko to repolarize
his neural sheaths following an accident in which the holosuite computer shorted
out and knocked him unconscious. The depolarization was causing heightened
neural activity, during which Sisko was experiencing visions. Sisko refused
the operation, not wanting to lose the visions, but after he collapsed and
was near death, Jake gave his consent as the closest relative. The operation
was a success. (Interestingly, this was during the period when Bashir had
been replaced by a Changeling, which wasn't revealed until a few episodes
later.)
neuromuscular
adaptation
A
biochemical treatment intended to help members of low-gravity species adapt
to higher gravity. It was first proposed by Nathaniel Teros in 2340, but abandoned
in the theoretical stage. Thirty years later, Bashir made it a reality using
neo-analyptic transmitters, and began treatments on Melora, until she chose
to discontinue them.
